Youth messages of hope inspire

LIFTING the spirits of their peers, 10 Chester Hill High School girls have created 49 posters through The Helmsman Project 2020.

A not-for-profit organisation, The Helmsman Project runs a coaching and experiential learning program for Year 9 students located in communities experiencing disadvantage.
Through professional coaching, hands-on experiences and community projects, young people learn to see the opportunities available to them and increase their sense of hope, self-regulation, resilience and community mindedness.

“Each year the students decide on their project and this year, as we’d just come back from lockdown and they knew many were doing it tough, they decided to create a range of inspirational messages,” Chester Hill High’s Transition Advisor and organising teacher Jeffrey Bullen said.
“When I saw the results I was quite taken aback, they are just so inspiring and of course, all handmade and beautiful. We are planning to post them up around the school and also at local youth centres.
“The students got so much out of it; it got them out of their comfort zone and developed confidence and pride. They all did it in their own time too, with the support of the online coaches, and collaborated on their ideas.”
Students taking part included Lyn Suleiman, Vivian Quach, Lisa Trinh, Tallara White, Zeenat Razak, Destiny Salah, Mariama Bah, Kayla Stephens, Maysa Chaker and Leila Safrglani.
