Youngest bowl champion at 13

BOWLS is an ideal sport for all ages and that was certainly the case at Club Merrylands Bowling Club last week when the Women’s Minor Pairs Championship was won by 13-year-old Lily Kirk who teamed up with 78-year-old Una Bell to become the youngest Club Champion at Merrylands.

The other finalists were of similar ages with 14-year-old Sophie Payne teaming up with septuagenarian Barbara Bungate.
Lily claimed the title of Youngest Champion in the Women’s Club history from one of her clubmates who won the Minor Singles only six weeks earlier – Reaghan Bunn turned 15 the week before her victory and broke the record of a 20-year-old from 2005.
Club Merrylands Bowl Co ordinator Gavin Holburn said Lily got into the game via her grandfather who is a bowler and Sophie became involved through a school program.
“The number of juniors (under 18s) at the club has gone from zero to 10 in the space of five months and both the kids and the older members are benefiting from it,” he said.
Women’s President, and Lily’s partner, Una said that there was a lot of excitement around the club regarding the new younger members.
“Not only are they great young people, but they are also very talented bowlers,” she said.
Una herself is rather new to the sport having transitioned into bowls from golf less than five years ago.
“Lily travels to Merrylands from the Blue Mountains a couple of times a week to practise and play and it has certainly paid off,” Una added.
