Amy Foster wins the Westfields Local Hero Award.

ROSELANDS single mum Amy Foster has been nominated for a Westfields Local Hero Award after setting up Embassy Community Care in Belmore three years ago to support the needy.

Amy Foster wins the Westfields Local Hero Award. She had been working in administration at the Embassy Church but when she saw the number of vulnerable residents needing support, decided to start the initiative on a volunteer basis with a small grant from Multicultural NSW and rescued food donations from FoodBank, OzHarvest, Share the Dignity, Hands and Feet charity, The Movement Sydney in Bankstown, Baker’s Delight and members of the community.
During Covid in 2021, Embassy Community Care provided over 2,500 emergency food hampers and tonnes of fresh bread to the most vulnerable in the community.
It also provided food assistance to a local DV refuge for women and children, food assistance for a breakfast club at Wiley Park Girls High School and a free community morning tea for the elderly, CALD, refugees and single parents who experience loneliness and food insecurity.
“We have also recently started Good Hood markets which are held once a month on the last Saturday of the month between 10am-2pm at the church, 76 Lakemba Street, where local small businesses can sell their goods, local charities and schools can fundraise and individuals can sell their second hand items,” she said.
If Amy wins the $20,000 for her charity in the Local Hero Awards, she will use the funds to replace their donated delivery van which is on its last legs.
“I’m really proud of what we have been able to achieve but we could do so much more with those funds,” she said.
