Turn on park lights for exercise only

THE lights have been switched on at 10 parks to give residents more time to exercise during the Covid-19 pandemic.

They will now stay on until 8pm on a trial basis but residents have been warned that if they flout the rules, the lights will be turned off.
Parks that will be lit up include Killara Reserve, Panania; Padstow Park, Padstow; Walshaw Park, Bass Hill; Kinch Reserve, Condell Park; Graf Park, Yagoona; Roberts Park, Greenacre; Clemton Park, Kingsgrove; Bennett Park, Narwee; Hughes Park, Earlwood; and Wagener Oval, Ashbury
A City of Canterbury Bankstown spokesperson says that when the lights are on, large groups of people tend to congregate, some to loiter, others to play ball sports like soccer, but the only reason people should be at the parks is to exercise – and not in groups.
“With the very strict health restrictions in place, it is imperative for everyone’s safety we ensure this does not happen,” she said.
“That’s why we have put up extra signage and will monitor behaviour. If we find that people are flouting the laws, we will be turning off the lights.”
