About 7.15pm, emergency services were called to the carpark of a shopping centre in Merrylands, where they found a 19-year-old man with a stab wound to his buttocks.
Police were told he was involved in a fight with a group of five other men, and was stabbed before the group fled the scene in a white BMW.
The men were armed with a baton and knife.
As investigations continue, police would like to speak to five males seen in the area who may be able to assist with inquiries. They are described as being of Middle Eastern/Mediterranean appearance with black hair.
Anyone who can help identify them, witnesses to the incident, or with dashcam footage from the area, is urged to contact police. Information is treated in strict confidence.
