Swifts’ late burst leads to victory

A HARD fought victory by the NSW Swifts over the Adelaide Thunderbirds, keeps them in the running for this year’s national netball silverware but Giants Netball have bowed out of finals contention after falling to West Coast Fever.

The Fever staged a second half fightback to win 71-66 and put an end to the Giants’ hopes.
Midcourters Jamie-Lee Price and Maddie Hay made every pass count with no turnovers between them for almost three quarters, but after a twisted ankle forced Hay from the court, the Giants’ five-goal lead turned into a three-goal deficit by the third change and they never recovered their momentum.
The Swifts also started strongly leading by seven at the first change, but two horror quarters almost derailed them.
However a strong final burst saw them finish in front with head coach Briony Akle describing the 57-54 win as “ugly” but saying she was happy that they “toughed it out to get some momentum”.
The results mean this Saturday’s last regular round of the season is a ‘dead derby’ between the Giants and Swifts.
