Students team up with Plaza to help illustrate indigenous culture with art

BASS Hill Plaza has partnered with five primary schools to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander across the community.

The inaugural Drawing Us Together campaign is a celebration of Indigenous culture through the creation of a children’s storybook, ‘Being a big brother’, written by Alton Walley, a Whadjuk, Wilman, Kaneang Nyoongar man from the South-West of Western Australian.
The story is based on this year’s NAIDOC message, ‘Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up’, focusing on the value of leadership and how we can influence those near to us to make a positive change.
Participating schools – Condell Park Public School, Chester Hill North Public School, George Bass School, Georges Hall Public School and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School – were asked to submit a series of artwork and designs to create the illustrations to feature in the story book.
Bass Hill Plaza Regional Marketing Manager Rhys Simonds said: “We want to work with schools’ existing programs to continue student awareness of distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders.”
