Strolling around area for amazing 18 years

DESCRIBED as a senior citizens group that’s outside in the fresh air, about 20 residents meet every morning at 6am on the walking track behind Belmore stadium eager for their dose of sunshine and camaraderie.

Aged in their 60s to 80s and with one referring to themselves as the ‘Belmore strollers’, the group has been going for an amazing 18 years with founding members Joe Harb and Ivan Trposka who walks twice a day.
Bill Petsalis, 74, joined about nine years after having a heart attack and being prescribed ‘walking’ by his cardiologist.
“I gave up smoking at the same time but walking is what has really helped me and kept me happy and healthy,” he says.
Kristina Gouskos, 70, has been walking with the group for six years and says she lost more weight walking than in the gym.
“I lost eight kilograms without trying,” she said.
“It’s nice to be part of the group; we reminisce, have a laugh and chat about what’s going on in our lives and the world.
“We all come from around Lakemba, Belmore and Campsie and I like to accompany the older ones home before heading home myself.”
Kristina says there’s always room for more and invites others to join them.
“Walking is absolutely the best thing you can do for your health,” she said.
