Sponsors Day fun for bowlers

WITH Dave Adam the oldest bowler at 95 and Jack Smith the youngest at 22, Club Picnic Point includes nearly 90 men bowlers and 20 women and is always ‘in the mix’ at the end of the season, according to Club President Steve Finnerty.

“Although the club is small, we feature strongly in all tournaments and are slowly becoming known as a competitive force in Zone 12, this year being Runners Up in the finals of the Pairs championship,” he said.
“We generally compete very well in the Rookies Championships and have won the event the last two years.
“Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to Covid restrictions; this also applied to the Pennants season.”
Taking part in the annual Major Sponsors Day recently, hosted by Alliance Real Estate Panania, winners comprised Dan Robinson, Max Jenkins and Bruce Belmond, with runners-up Judy Cullen, Jack Smith and Norma Jenkins.
Third place-getters were Ken Gale, Gary Melvold and Mark de Gruchy.
Other award winners for the day were Stuart Harrison, Mick Furniss, Darren Bromley, Wayne Peake, Merv Crutchley and Peta Geldard.
“The draw was a random pick format to help make the teams even; it was such a fun, communal day,” Finnerty said.
Formed in 1962, the club plays championship pennants competitions in both the Men’s and Women’s associations.
“We believe it is the friendly family atmosphere of the club that is the main attraction to players with a great emphasis on the social activities,” Finnerty added.
“Though bowls is our main sport, we also have a Darts Club, Golf Club and Fishing Club.
“We also offer free bowls coaching clinics to anyone wanting to learn the sport. Our coaches Ian Geldard and Bruce Belmond are Bowls Australia Approved.
“Our next major competitions are the Zone and District Pennants Championships starting in February to March, 2021 (Covid restrictions permitting).”
