Slams nurse attack

AN off-duty nurse was allegedly attacked and her arm broken in three places when she came to the aid of a man lying unconscious on a footpath at Newtown on Tuesday afternoon.

About 2.50pm, police were called to King Street, Newtown, responding to reports of a woman was being assaulted by a man.
Police said the 65-year-old woman – who is a registered nurse – was walking along King Street when she stopped to help a 24-year-old man lying unconscious on the footpath. Another man approached her and allegedly pushed her to the ground, before jumping on top of her and further assaulting her.
Members of the public intervened and pushed the man off her, then called police and NSW Ambulance paramedics.
A 57-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
The woman was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and admitted for treatment for three fractures to her right arm and bruising.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian condemned any attacks against frontline workers.
“Every time we hear an example of a frontline worker being disrespected or attacked, whether they’re on duty or off duty, is of concern and we wish the person well,” she said.
