Report sex abuses urged

A PUBLIC petition detailing thousands of stories of sexual violence and misconduct, has sparked a reminder from the NSW Police that such incidents can be reported either formally or informally.

Launching Operation Vest last week, the commander of the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, Detective Superintendent Stacey Maloney, commended the bravery of the young women prepared to speak out.
“We want you to know that if you share your story with us, we will listen to you and if you decide to pursue legal action, immediately or anytime, we will stand by your side through that process,” she said.
Incidents can be reported through Triple Zero (000), at a local police station or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 but officers will not pursue a criminal investigation through to the court process without gaining permission by way of a formal statement.
Even if a person chooses not to proceed to the courts, a report can help police identify a potential offender.
“We certainly encourage victims of sexual violence to come forward and report their matters, as their assault may not be isolated,” Det Supt Maloney said.
“Your matter may be connected to other incidents of sexual violence and provide investigators with additional information to prevent perpetrators from reoffending.”
Another option is to complete a Sexual Assault Reporting Option (SARO) which can also be done anonymously; if the report relates to someone under 18, police are required by law to notify the Child Protection Helpline.
