Now after taking the risk and just a short year in the air, Sydney Flight College (SFC) in Georges Hall, has awarded her this year’s Women in Aviation Scholarship in partnership with the Australian Women Pilots’ Association (AWPA).
The WIA Scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in SFC’s diploma program following an application and selection process.
Having just received her Recreational Pilot’s Licence, Leigh said she was aware that the infamous “only five per cent of pilots in the world are female” statistic may create challenges for herself and other women thinking about joining the industry but was grateful she had found her passion.
“I am continually amazed by this industry and am learning every day the openness and willingness to increase diversity across the board,” she said.
“Sydney Flight College, with the support of the AWPA, have been a pillar of this and I am honoured to be a part of it.”
Leigh said this was only the beginning and she still had a long way to go.
“I am excited to see where my future leads me and to be able to genuinely enjoy what I do every day,” she said.
“Thank you to the AWPA for assisting me on this journey; it is a huge honour.”
Pilot Leigh’s study takes off
