BAGGING two medals, Merrylands Amateur Swimming Club was represented by seven swimmers at the Metro South West Open Water Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Unish Shrestha and Alison Johnston both took home medals, with Unish finishing third in his age group in the 2.5km event and Alison winning her age group in the 5km event.
“The meet was a big learning experience for our team, especially for Unish, Daniel Vicic, Joseph Assi and Joab Hada, who were swimming in their first Open Water competition,” Club President Graham Edwards said.
Swimming was one of the most popular sports for Active Kids voucher redemption last season – number one for females and second for males across the Cumberland LGA – and the club’s Learn to Swim program is making a splash again in early 2022.
“Swimming is an important part of the Australian sporting and leisure landscape and our club offers a range of swimming activities including club races and squad training as well as Learn to Swim,” Edwards said.
Club members will next splash out at the 2022 Speedo Sprint Series on Sunday, February 13, at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.
The Speedo Sprint Series caters for girls and boys aged between 8-13 years in 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly events and is a great way to have fun and learn new skills in a friendly environment.
Also popular among young swimmers, the Merrylands SwimFest will follow on Saturday, February 19, at Merrylands Swim Centre.
“The SwimFest provides good practice for school swimming carnivals and is double-headed with our annual Merrylands Masters Meet for those aged over 18,” Edwards said.
