Mayor wants return of area ‘city’ status

SEVEN years after the forced amalgamations of councils, stripped Auburn and Holroyd of their City status, there are plans to have them returned as one, under the Cumberland City banner.

At Mayor Lisa Lake’s request, Cumberland Council will write to the NSW Minister for Local Government to have the area constituted and re-named Cumberland City, which would also carry over to council’s branding.
“It is growing rapidly and stands as a city in every sense of the word,” Mayor Lake said.
The council has been trading under the name of ‘Cumberland City Council’ after it was approved in December 2019 and it has been used on the council’s branding including its logo, signage and letterhead.
However, Mayor Lake said that it had created some confusion for stakeholders who had on occasions, erroneously applied this business name when the council’s legal name was required, such as in contracts, property dealings, court pleadings or other legal documents.
“Indeed, even some candidates were surprised to discover during the 2021 Local Government elections that the body politic they were seeking election to, remained Cumberland Council,” she said.
The amalgamation included a small piece of the Parramatta local government area.
She said the widespread reference as Cumberland City Council had now been in use for four years and a return to the former “would be costly and disruptive”.
Cumberland is the seventh largest local government area in NSW by population.
Cr Steve Christou welcomed the proposal and said although “four years late … better late than never”, with Cr Kun Huang replying with “why didn’t he (Cr Christou) do it”.
