Low cost housing say urged

HOW to deliver affordable housing is an ongoing problem for planning authorities however a new draft strategy is aiming to address a number of issues in the Cumberland local government area.

While it is a metropolitan-wide issue for Greater Sydney, Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou says the demands and need for affordable housing are “disproportionately concentrated in Sydney’s west”.
“It is estimated that there is a housing need of 10,700 new affordable housing dwellings in Cumberland between 2016 and 2036, of which approximately 70 per cent will be needed for very low income households, and 50 per cent of which will need to be larger dwellings,” he said.
Cr Christou says a draft Cumberland Affordable Housing Strategy, which is open for public comment until Friday, August 21, focuses specifically on the challenges facing the council in responding to the local need for affordable housing and he is encouraging people to have their say.
“The draft strategy focuses on mechanisms and actions which will be most effective within the Cumberland context,” he said.
“Housing affordability is a key consideration for the Cumberland community, particularly given the household structures, demographics and cultural diversity of the population.”
