Learn secrets of deep breathing to boost happiness and prevent illness

TAKE a deep breath.

More vital now than ever because of challenges arising out of Covid, deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body, according to breathing technique expert from the Tej Gyan Global Foundation, Priti Chaporkar.
She says this is because when you breathe deeply, it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax.
The brain then sends this message to your body.
“The term ‘fight or flight’ is also known as the stress response,” Priti said.
“It’s what the body does as it prepares to confront or avoid danger. When appropriately invoked, the stress response helps us rise to many challenges.
“But trouble starts when this response is constantly provoked by day-to-day events, such as money woes, traffic jams, job worries, or relationship problems which can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, lowered immunity and depression.”
Helping residents develop healthier ways of responding to stress, the ‘Secrets of Breathing’ is a free online course hosted by Cumberland Council and on offer on Saturday, September 26, 4-6pm.
“Most of us are shallow breathers since we are all in a hurry,” Priti said.
“Learning how to breathe properly will help many areas of your life due to the benefits of the extra oxygen, including your immunity, quality of sleep and general health, including lowering sugar levels which is vital to avoid or reduce diabetes.
“We want to help everyone lead a better life and you will feel the benefits after just one session.”
