Join effort at Clean Up Australia event

PICKING up other people’s rubbish might not be the ideal way to spend a Sunday morning but hundreds of volunteers are set to roll up their sleeves for Clean Up Australia this Sunday (March 7).

In the wake of a surge in single use disposable items, Clean Up Australia chairperson, Pip Kiernan, says now is the time for all Australians to ‘Step Up to Clean Up’ and help to protect and conserve their local environments, whether they are first-time volunteers or more seasoned ‘Clean Up champions’.
“It’s never been more important to get involved and make a real difference,” she said.
One long-time participant ready to go is Australia Afghan Hassanian Youth Association (AAHYA) president, Sayeed Karimi, who is expecting a good turnout at their two sites in Auburn and Regents Park after receiving calls early last month asking about the event.
“It is an important activity because we need to keep the beautiful environment here clean,” he said.
“We also need to teach the next generations, particularly kids from migrant backgrounds and who are newly arrived here, about this important Australian community event.”
Mayor Steve Christou also invited residents to lend a hand at Cumberland Council’s event at the Holroyd Gardens in Merrylands from 8.30am, which will be followed by a free ‘thank you’ barbecue for volunteers.
He says while council staff “perform an excellent job” in maintaining the city’s cleanliness, he passionately believes that reducing litter is everyone’s responsibility.
“So let’s do our part and make Cumberland City a great place to live,” he said.
“We know that Australia’s waste challenges can’t be solved in one day. It’s about taking pride in our parks, streets and suburbs by keeping them clean.”
