How to save child’s life

THOUSANDS of students are expected to be diving in after the return of swimming lessons at Auburn’s Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre this month.

The Learn to Swim program runs for 48 weeks of the year normally, with the only break during Christmas and New Year to ensure children can continue to learn and develop their swimming skills throughout the year.
It’s $22.60 a lesson, with more than 2,000 children in the Learn to Swim and Squad programs passing through the turnstiles each week.
Belgravia Leisure manages the pools on behalf of Cumberland City Council and say when they closed their doors in June 2021, program numbers exceeded the pre-Covid numbers which is encouraging for the take-up of lessons this year.
“Swimming is a skill for life and a potential life-saving skill especially in Australia where there is so much access to water,” Belgravia Leisure’s NSW Area Manager Scott Vanderheyden said.
“Safety in and around the water has always been one of Belgravia Leisure’s highest priorities, and regular swimming lessons play an important role in reinforcing confidence in the water.
“According to Royal Life Saving Australia’s most recent National Drowning Report, there were 294 reported deaths due to drowning between July 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021.
“Tragically, these statistics represent the highest number of drowning deaths in children aged 0 to four years and five to 14 years in the last two decades.”
