Headstone removed from yard

DEEPLY distressed, East Hills resident Janet Deans could hardly believe what she was hearing when daughter Cassandra phoned her in hospital last Tuesday to tell her that her husband George’s headstone had been stolen from the front garden of their home.

“When my husband died four years ago in May, we didn’t want to lay him to rest with strangers so instead, had him cremated and his ashes were put in a casket, alongside the ashes of his beloved dog Gizmo,” Mrs Deans said.
“We buried the casket and erected the granite headstone on top, along with a plaque, two Scottish flags and some artificial tulips.
“That’s where the ashes have been residing ever since until last week.”
Mrs Deans said the thieves only took the headstone and plaque, leaving the flags, tulips and luckily the casket since it was buried and not visible.
“It’s as bad as defacing a headstone in a cemetery,” she said.
“I can’t comprehend how anyone could do this, what a bunch of low lives.
“People used to come past and read the headstone since my husband was a popular teacher at East Hills Boys and Picnic Point High Schools, and now it’s gone.
“We felt that he was with us through our tribute to him and these people or person has just come in, trampled on our garden and memories and stolen the headstone; it’s unbelievable.”
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the headstone, should call police who are investigating on 131 444.
