Free bread for all locals

RIVERWOOD Housing Estate tenants and local residents are the big winners after Mission Australia’s Olive Tongiahoe noticed that, along with Bankstown charity The Movement, there was a surplus of bread being delivered to the group for dispersal from Bakers Delight, Coles and Aldi.

“I knew there were a couple of hundred tenants at Riverwood from my work with Mission Australia’s Tenants Participation and Community Engagement program (TPCE), so we organised to set up a Giving Table there once a week,” she said.
“We started this initiative in April and it has been so well supported with numbers growing every week for the free bread, veggies and fruit.
“It was really ideal during the lockdown as people were going without since they were too scared to leave their homes.”
Operating in the Housing Estate carpark at 4 Roosevelt Avenue, Riverwood, the Giving Table is on offer every Wednesday, 3-4pm, with all Riverwood locals welcome, not just the tenants.
Volunteers have also been keeping the community busy with a greening initiative, delivering pots to tenants to decorate and grow plants and herbs.
