Former junior legatee proud to accept job of torch bearer

DESCRIBING it as an honour, Bradley Marshall will be the torch bearer when the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023, celebrating Legacy’s 100 years, arrives in Bankstown tomorrow.

Making its way around Australia after starting at Pozieres, France on ANZAC Day 2023 and travelling through London and Belgium before arriving in Albany, WA, on May 3, the torch will visit all 45 legacy clubs in every State, including Bankstown on Thursday, July 22, and eventually finish in Melbourne on October 12.
The ceremony gets underway at Paul Keating Park at 11am when there will be a symbolic torch lighting before it is presented to Mayor Bilal El-Hayek followed by a reception.
Bradley, 60, said Legacy had been looking after him since he was three-years-old when his father went to the Vietnam War and never came home.
“I’m very grateful to all the legatees and what they did for me,” he said.
“They organised special classes for me all during school and have always given me a lot of friendship and support.
“When I was offered the job of being torch bearer, I was happy to accept and being part of history.”
Bradley’s nominator, Bankstown Legacy Secretary Alan Rawlinson said Legacy stepped in when Bradley was younger and got behind in his studies.
“Brad is doing a great job for us as liaison officer with the war widows,” Alan said.
“His heart is definitely in the right place and he is very deserving of this opportunity.”
