Flights temporarily grounded

TRAINING flights in and out of Bankstown Airport were temporarily grounded by the thick smoke which blanketed most of Sydney on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the airport said pilots of planes and helicopters rated for visual flying were unable to operate in the smokey conditions, however emergency services, including firefighting aircraft which are instrument rated, were unaffected.
The Canterbury Bankstown Council says they may also close outdoor pools and golf courses in the LGA due to health concerns related to the hazy conditions.
A Council spokesperson said: “We are guided by the experts, with the health of our residents our priority, so if particle readings provided by the (Department of Planning, Industry and Environment) increase on any particular day, we close our pools and Sefton Golf Course, for a period of time.”
