Fear targeted shooting to
lead to more violent acts

TENSION remains high two days after 44-year-old Mejid Hamzy was gunned down outside a Condell Park home. Mr Hamzy was shot at 7.30am on Monday morning by two men that police believe were laying in wait for him and there are fears of more acts of violence to come.

Ambushed outside his Condell Park home, Mejid Hamzy managed to move or run a short distance before collapsing after being shot by two men early on Monday morning.

Called to Simmat Avenue just before 7.30am, emergency services found the older brother of jailed Brothers 4 Life gang leader Bassam Hamzy suffering several gunshot wounds but he died at the scene.

Bankstown Police Commander, Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said and they were looking for two men who had been seen running from the scene before leaving in a vehicle.

“Based on what we know, it would appear those two males … have been waiting for the male to leave his house this morning,” he said.

“At this stage, no weapon has been found.”

Early investigations indicate it was a targeted attack and A/Supt Sly said someone who was prepared to shoot another human being was the “type of person we don’t want in our society”.

“You can’t get anything worse,” he said.

“Police are always worried in circumstances like this, when we have a public shooting, that there could be repercussions, but certainly police will make all their efforts to try and stop it if we can.”

An investigation is also underway into a burnt-out vehicle found at Yagoona shortly after the shooting although A/Supt Sly said it was too early to say if it was linked.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, he also called for anyone with information about the shooting to contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
