Completes 50th virtual City2Surf

GREENACRE running legend Chris Moynham completed his 50th City2Surf earlier this month and helped create history after it was held as a ‘virtual’ event for the first time due to Covid.

“I had more trouble with downloading the app and creating my profile than I did with the run,” he said with a laugh.
Running every week at Westies Joggers running club at Lake Gillawarna, Georges Hall, the 77-year-old ran in the very first City2Surf in 1971 and he hasn’t missed one since; a formidable achievement that places him in a very select group of runners.
“I was about 10 minutes slower this year because I walked the run, I was just so intent on completing it,” he said.
“In previous years, I would run downhill and walk uphill.”
Saying he did miss the welcoming salty beach air and frothy surf at the race’s completion, this year was nonetheless a special one.
“I had my great nephew Kane, 12, walking with me and completing his very first City2Surf,” he said.
Already looking forward to next year’s race, Chris said he hoped it would be back at Bondi.
“I miss the wall to wall of spectators either side, wishing you well, it’s just such a great atmosphere,” he said.
The fastest time on the day went to Geoff Sheargold in a time of 0:55:27, with Chris finishing in a respectable time of 2:28:46.
“A huge thanks to our race director on the day, Vic Anderson and our team of volunteers Rob, Paul, Tony and Ken for making it possible and thanks to our club supporters,” Chris said.
Westies Joggers Running Club meets every Saturday morning at Lake Gillawarna, Georges Hall. New runners welcome. For details, go to westiesjoggers.com.
