IN what was shaping up as an intriguing fixture involving the Bankstown Sports Bulldogs, the weather proved the victor.
Randwick-Petersham resumed with 7 wickets down but the innings quickly disintegrated being dismissed for 311.
Speedster Liam Marshall ripped in from the Grahame Thomas end and was way too hostile for the visitors finishing with the fine figures of 4-73 from 19 penetrating overs.
Bankstown got off to a dodgy start with the loss of Zeeshaan Ahmed but soon recovered with Nick Carruthers and Mitchell Hinds taking the total to 1-58 at lunch.
Alas what was shaping as an intriguing battle fizzled out as the deluge swept in.
Carruthers hammered 34 not out with five sparkling boundaries and included a powerful pull shot which rocketed to the fence.
He mixed that with stylish drives including one rattling through the covers at great speed.
Nick’s strong start to the season follows on from winning the prestigious Bankstown Sports Player of the Year and Player’s Player awards from last year and he would be an ideal performer in the T20 arena if given the opportunity.
Mitchell Hinds played a delightful little cameo with his 19 not out which included two super sixes which soared high over the fence.
The seconds were struggling at 4-91 in reply to the Randwick-Petersham total of 7-379 when the rains tumbled down.
Daniel Nicotra played a lone hand to get the Bulldogs barking, compiling a disciplined 45.
Next Saturday, the Bulldogs take on the Panthers at Howell Oval in a one-day match and the lower grades finally start their competitions following a very long off-season and pre-season.
It was wonderful to see the Bankstown skipper Daniel Solway once again among the runs for the NSW Blues in the Sheffield Shield encounter with Western Australia.
He helped Moises Henriques to attack the Warriors with the Bankstown boy most impressive with a majestic 86.
The pair shared a double century stand that turned the match around.
The 25-year-old local lad has a first class batting average of 58.4 from just a tad short of 600 runs.
Solway is the Bulldogs skipper when available and is a prolific run scorer for his beloved Bankstown.
