Back demand to demerge council

CANTERBURY Bankstown councillors Barbara Coorey and Karl Saleh joined angry residents from across the State to demand action on council demergers at Parliament House in Sydney last week.

The deputy mayors of the former Canterbury Council – now part of the merged council – made their concerns known at the “hugely successful” rally, jointly organised by the Demerge NSW Alliance (DNA) and Sydney’s Residents for Deamalgamation.
Independent Councillor Barbara Coorey spoke about the historic move by Canterbury Bankstown Council, the largest council in the State, to prepare a business case to demerge.
The City of Canterbury Bankstown was one of 19 new local government areas proclaimed in NSW in 2016 after the State Government merged the two councils.
Cr Coorey said the merger was “shameful and without any justification … we were promised the world and given an atlas”.
