Artists with disability group finally finds home

AFTER 20 years of community venue hopping, Studio Artes – supporting artists with a disability – has found a permanent home at Sydenham and will open in October.

The new studio – at 45 Unwins Bridge Road – run by Jessica Raymond, will host arts and living skills programs for both groups and individuals, as well as online programs created in the on-site digital studio.
Jessica said she was looking forward to moving into the new base.
“I also look forward to welcoming many new people with a disability to our programs in Sydneham so they can experience the numerous social, emotional and personal benefits that come from creative expression,” she said.
After swinging into action once Covid hit and switching to digital programs to be enjoyed via Zoom, Studio Artes now offers creative arts, textiles (supported by mailed work packs), visual arts, dance, music and drama online plus a literacy and numeracy group, cooking, and a science and discovery group.
CEO Deb Sazdanoff says the online programs have been a Godsend for people feeling isolated and alone.
“Covid-19 has changed the way we work and this new site will allow us to not only work under these restrictions, but allow us to build for our wonderful post Covid future,” she said.
“Our new location close to Sydneham station, means more accessibility for people across Sydney, and another digital studio means our talented staff can offer more amazing online programs to adults with a disability across the country.“
