Arrest over crash, injuring 14

DRIVER who allegedly crashed into a women’s clothing shop and injured 14 people at Greenacre on Thursday afternoon, has been charged with a number of serious driving offences.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Boronia and Waterloo Roads just before 3.15pm, after reports that a Mitsubishi SUV had allegedly crashed into a vehicle stopped at the traffic lights before hitting the storefront.

Ambulance paramedics treated 14 people with a range of injuries at the scene, with 10 then taken to Liverpool, Bankstown, and Canterbury hospitals in stable conditions for further treatment.
Hijab House owner Steve Houchar said his daughter was one of two staff in the shop at the time of the accident and it was a miracle no-one was killed, adding that the immediate aftermath of the crash was “mayhem”.
Calling for additional bollards to be installed facing Juno Parade, he said the shop would remain closed for the time being.
“We want to take stock and make sure the girls are fine,” he said.
“We are just trying to give them as much support as we can.”
The Mitsubishi driver, a 51-year-old man, was arrested and taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing before being interviewed by officers from the Crash Investigation Unit, and was later released.
However following further inquiries, he was re-arrested at a home on Wangee Road in Greenacre on Friday and charged with five traffic offences including negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm) and proceed through red traffic light.
He was also charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and not give particulars to other driver, in relation to an unrelated traffic incident at Lakemba on January 14.
