Jets fly in to win

Jets backrower Jayson Bukuya bursts through the Penrith Panthers’ defence to score a splendid individual try last Friday.

THE Newtown Jets have proven again that they are more than capable of matching it with any of the top four 2019 Canterbury Cup NSW teams.

Keep semi-final hope alive

The Jets went into last Friday night’s match against Penrith at Panthers Stadium as declared underdogs, but the 10th placed Jets proceeded to turn the tables on the third placed Panthers by pulling off an emphatic 28-18 win.
The match was played in full-on wintry conditions and Penrith scored an easy try in the second minute of play.
Newtown responded in vigorous style and turned on creative attacking play and disciplined defence for the remainder of the first half, taking an 18-6 lead into the halftime break.
The Panthers fought back and put the Jets under considerable pressure, narrowing Newtown’s lead to 18-14 midway through the second half. The Jets, through the clever involvement of Greg Eastwood, Scott Sorensen and Braydon Trindall, laid on a superb try in the 64th minute to give themselves a vital 10-point buffer zone.
The addition of two penalty goals late in the game, ensured victory for the Jets and kept their semi-finals hopes alive.
Newtown has a bye in this weekend.
