All invited to have ball at free try day

IF you are looking for a fun, summer sport, the Wenty Waratahs Softball Club will be hosting a free ‘Come and Try’ afternoon at the Ted Burge Oval in Merrylands this Sunday, August 18, from 2pm to 4pm.

Why softball’s tops for family

Club secretary Kellie Polaschek says unlike baseball which has overarm pitching, softball players pitch underarm and use a slightly bigger ball.
Both she and her husband play each week, as do all her children, from her youngest who is aged eight, through to her oldest at 23, and she says their involvement shows that softball is a game for everyone.
Children aged from four to 10 play T-ball, and young players who register will receive a free softball glove. The club is also an Active Kids Provider.
“We also have teams for Under 12s, 14s, 16s and adults, as well as mixed teams,” she said.
Training in Merrylands, competition games for juniors are played at the International Peace Park in Seven Hills and for seniors at Stanhope Gardens in Parklea every Saturday from October to March, with a break over the Xmas/school holiday period.
“We play at the same time, and at the same venue every week and no experience is necessary to start,” Polaschek said.
“There are also no ongoing costs, just pay for registration, that’s all.”
