Explore world while boosting fitness, fun

LOOKING for a little more adventure in life?
How about exploring an ancient cave or abseiling down a mountain, even trekking in Nepal?

Formed almost 40 years ago, Bankstown Bushwalking Club was founded by a group of like-minded people from the area who saw the benefits that bushwalking could give them on their quest for a healthy body and mind.
Getting out into nature, and the beautiful bush environments, rather than staying indoors in front of a screen or in a gym, has many benefits including improving fitness, connecting participants to the wider world, with the opportunity of appreciating local flora and fauna, and experiencing the camaraderie of the variety of members.

The club has now grown to over 140 members, with a general age range from 20s through to 70s, including families with younger children.

Club president Thais Turner says anyone who wants to explore walking and other adventures in the outdoors is welcome.

“The range of activities has expanded from day walks, to include overnight and multi-day backpack camping trips, cycling, abseiling, caving, canyoning, indoor climbing, rogaining, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, car-camping trips and social activities,” Thais said.

“Favourite local destinations include the Georges River area, Sydney Harbour, Blue Mountains and Wollemi National Parks.

“Also visited are some more remote areas to the north, west and south of Sydney, plus other areas of NSW and Australia. Some have also enjoyed overseas trips to New Zealand, Nepal, Italy, UK, Russia, Europe and the Americas.”

Monthly club nights, held on the second Monday excluding December and January, alternate between a general meeting with supper afterwards and a social night featuring audiovisual presentations or bushcraft info, giving members and visitors a chance to meet and chat at Georges Hall Community Centre, 188 Birdwood Road.
