How junior doctor at hospital follows in parents’ footsteps

Dr Joseph, a 2019 University Medallist in Medicine, said she was proud to begin her career at the hospital where her parents completed their training and her two youngest siblings were born.
“It is an honour to be following in my parents’ footsteps. My family is very proud of our connections with the hospital,’’ Dr Joseph said.
The 24-year-old’s parents, Dr Ehab Joseph and Dr Randa Selim, both GPs, met in medical school in Egypt before completing their internships at Bankstown in 2000.
Dr Joseph, who is starting a Masters of Surgery this year, said she had many happy memories of her childhood in the Bankstown community.
“I remember coming to the hospital with my parents as a child – it is wonderful to be here again,’’ she said.
“I love the sense of community at the hospital and the vibrant cultural mix of the area.
“I am looking forward to my training and making a contribution like my parents.’’
Dr Selim said they were extremely proud of their daughter.
“It is very exciting,” she said.
“Maria already knows some of the doctors there that we used to work with and comes home with stories everyday; she loves it there as did we.”
Dr Selim says older daughter Karen is a doctor at Fairfield Hospital, while third daughter Michelle is in the Army but studying Engineering.
Their youngest, Phillip started out studying Engineering but is switching to Medicine so there will be five doctors in the family when he graduates.
Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital General Manager Peter Rophail said: “This is a wonderful milestone for the hospital as well as Dr Joseph and her family.
“We are very proud of the generations of families who have completed their training and established their careers at our hospital.’’
