Participants were encouraged to showcase their talents, contributions and capabilities through music and a song, with a short film created based on their achievements.
This year’s IDPWD theme was ‘promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership’.
According to the 2016 national census, there were 12,502 people living with a disability in the Cumberland region, with Mayor Steve Christou saying the event was about “promoting awareness, acceptance and understanding of people with disability”.
“We will create a future that demands access for everyone,” he said.
“This could mean providing ramp access instead of stairs, or a job without discrimination. Working towards an accessible future is everyone’s responsibility.
“We want to create more liveable places and an inclusive community, which address the rights and contributions of people with disability.”
NSW Minister for Disability Services, Gareth Ward, also encouraged employers to reap the benefits of a diverse and inclusive workplace.
“People with disability can bring different perspectives, opinions and ideas to a range of sectors and be invaluable employees,” Mr Ward said.
“In addition, workers with disability often have lower rates of absenteeism and stay in their job for longer.”
