Items urged for animals, firies

WHEN someone asks Sami Ryan whether she’s feeling hot and stuffy decked out in her Santa outfit outside Blooms Chemist or Gloria Jeans in Padstow, she simply replies: “If you were one of those animals caught in a bushfire, how hot would you feel?”
Always happy to help a worthy cause, Sami, nearly 77 and a resident of Padstow and Revesby for the past 70 years, started collecting items for the bushfire victims, carers and firefighters about a month ago.
“A fortnight ago, I sent six full boxes of items to the collection centre in Mortdale and the staff there send them on to the animal rescue hubs around the State,” she explained.
“I’ve made and collected ‘pouches’ made from refurbished beanies, sheets and leftover fabrics, crocheted birds’ nests among other items plus have included sweets, biscuits and other goods for their carers.”
Sami, a JP of 15 years, says she is also collecting items for the firefighters like first aid products, wipes, eye drops, antiseptic creams and bandages – hence, recently setting up her table outside Blooms Chemist.
“In addition, I’m encouraging people to write a letter of thanks to the firefighters which will be included in their first aid care packages,” she added.
“We are very lucky to have such a tireless group of hard-working men and women and need to show our appreciation.”
Anyone who is able to donate items or a letter, not cash, can call Sami on 0405 211 799 or email araluent@tpg.com.au.
