No sport for 800 students

After grass area access is closed

IT’S lucky that school has broken up for the year since over 800 Greenacre Public School students no longer have access to a grassed area and nowhere to play sport.
Parent Susan said the school had access to a grassy pocket of Roberts Park at the back of the school until several weeks before the end of term, when the council swiftly moved to block access without warning.
“It’s a major drama for the kids, imagine hundreds of them with no access to a grass play area,” she said.
“During the last few weeks of the school year, teachers had to conduct sport activities inside; it’s so not fair.
“We were told the council was starting work on the new waterpark and that’s when they discovered some asbestos but surely an area where hundreds of kids can play sport is more important than a waterpark; it’s just not practical.”
A council spokesperson said: “A section of Roberts Park, Greenacre, has been temporarily closed after fragments of asbestos were found in the north-east corner.
“This is a precautionary and standard measure, which is required by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
“The council is providing regular updates on the issue, and is working with the school to find alternative open spaces for it to use.”
