A fun way to keep brain fuzz away

OFTEN described as a ‘retro’ sport, table tennis is enjoying a resurgence as more people discover its surprising benefits and none more so than a group of about 60 regulars who descend on Padstow RSL on Thursdays from 7.30pm.

Along with the chance of winning a $70 prize pool in ‘Padstow Cash’ (which must be spent at the club on food or drinks only), members enjoy all kinds of physical, mental and emotional benefits.
One of the organisers who has been playing at the club for about 12 years, Simon Leung said: “Table tennis stimulates mental alertness, concentration and tactical strategy, and burns calories.
“This makes it the perfect game for younger players to sharpen their reflexes, and for older people to refine tactics and help boost brainpower.
“We play at the club in four grades – A, B, C and D – and players are graded as such; the very strong and the beginners all have a chance at doing well and winning the cash.”
Have you had knee surgery, back problems or tired of twisting your ankles?
Try table tennis.
It’s a great way to improve your leg, arm and core strength without overtaxing your joints, according to Simon.
“It’s very sociable at Padstow RSL,” he said.
“A lot of people come a bit earlier and have a meal before and a drink between games.
“Some of us wanting more of a challenge also play in the St George and Sutherland Shire competition on a Tuesday night too.”
Closed for four weeks over Christmas and January, the table tennis club costs $30 a year for Padstow RSL club members and for more info, email padstowrsltabletennis@gmail.com.
