Smoke can trigger health risk

SMOKE from bushfires near Sydney has blanketed the western suburbs with a thick haze.

Poor air quality, combined with a predicted record-breaking hot spell, has prompted a warning from health authorities.
NSW Health Director of Environmental Health, Dr Richard Broome, says the fine particles in smoke can irritate the respiratory system and aggravate existing lung and heart conditions.
“For most people, smoke causes mild symptoms like sore eyes, nose and throat. However, people with conditions like asthma, emphysema and angina are more likely to be sensitive to the health effects of smoke,” he said.
Dr Broome also urged people to avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, to minimise physical activity and to keep well hydrated.
