Truckies risk fine for illegal parking

TRUCKIES have been slammed for ignoring parking laws, with Cumberland Council issuing more than 1,700 fines over the past six months.

Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou says the council has received more than 540 complaints about trucks parking illegally in six months, with many relating to trucks using on-street parking in residential areas for extended periods of time.
“The message is simple – if you operate a large or heavy truck, residents don’t want you parking in front of their home,” Cr Christou said.
“Many of our streets are already gridlocked with traffic and it’s not acceptable that a truck that weighs several tonnes or is several metres long, should occupy valuable real estate and take up several car spaces.
“It’s interfering with a residents’ right to peace and quiet and it’s posing a safety risk to pedestrians and other drivers using these streets.”
Cr Christou said parking laws were very clear and parking rules applied to heavy vehicles, with 4.5 tonnes or more gross vehicle mass, or long vehicles, 7.5 metres or longer.
“The driver of a heavy vehicle must not stop on a length of road in a residential area for longer than one hour,” he said.
“If you park your truck illegally, you will be caught and fined $114 for the offence.”
Residents can report incidents to the council on 8757 9000.
