Turn first sod for hospital upgrade

WORK has begun on the $25 million expansion of the Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Emergency Department.

East Hills MP Wendy Lindsay and Cr George Zakhia joined Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital general manager Peter Rophail and Aboriginal Elder Uncle Harry (pictured) to turn the first sod last week and “mark this important milestone in the expansion”.
The new state-of-the-art emergency department is expected to be completed early next year and will include more treatment spaces; additional short stay unit capacity; enhanced emergency care for the local community in a safe, contemporary facility; and faster initiation of treatment, which are all expected to help shorten waiting times.
“This redevelopment project will provide the community with an upgraded emergency department designed to meet the needs of all community members requiring emergency care, well into the future,” Ms Lindsay said.
