Volunteer Alexia, 10, needing help to reach $10,000 goal for sick kids

A VOLUNTEER at a youth refuge, despite being just 10 years old, Alexia Plakidis has decided to shave her head next month to raise awareness for children fighting cancer.

But the student, from St Peter Chanel Catholic School in Regents Park, is not only donating her hair to the children’s variety charity but also aiming to raise $10,000 for the Starlight Foundation.
Alexia’s father George had cancer almost 20 years ago.
Mother Rachel says: “It was an extremely tough time and impacted on the family immensely.
“George showed courage and strength everyday, and as the effects of chemo and radiotherapy took their toll, his courage and spirit prevailed and he won the battle.
“It challenged my perceptions at the age of 24 and I was taught that life can go in a different direction at any given moment.
“As part of teaching our children about the journey of how they came to be, we are also trying to encouraging them to be good human beings.”
And this is certainly true of Alexia.
“She has the most beautiful soul and compassion for others,” Rachel added.
Already having raised over $2,000, Alexia said she thought that by doing a small thing like having her head shaved and gathering sponsors, she could make a big difference.
“I thought what would happen if I had cancer, what can I do to help and I want to help sick kids,” she explained.
And the future?
“I would like to be an artist or singer when I grow up but Dad wants me to be a physiotherapist because I do such a good job of massaging his sore foot.”
