Group has recycling in the bag

SEWING workshops hosted by the Berala Community Centre to help residents (pictured) create their own ‘Boomerang Bags’ are proving popular.

Begun in 2013 after a conversation about plastic, the Boomerang Bags movement encourages local communities, groups and individuals to get together to sew unwanted clothes and other material into reusable bags with the aim of replacing plastic bags.
Extra bags made during the workshop are given to a community bag share program, and if you’re not interested in sewing, you can also donate old tablecloths, pillowcases or cotton fabric to either the Berala Community Centre or Cumberland’s Merrylands Council office.
The next Boomerang Bag Sewing Bee will be on November 29.
