Employment is integral in the settlement journey for newly arrived refugees, migrants and people seeking asylum, providing a valuable pathway to achieving independence.
Young mother Sabha, who arrived from Iraq just two weeks ago, said she attended the event to socialise in a positive environment and gain knowledge about entering the Australian workforce.
“I came here because I would like to try and find work soon, when my children are old enough to attend school, and it is helpful to get some information about how I could do this and what work I could find.”
To highlight opportunities and support available, SSI’s Community Kitchen partnered with service providers and employment support organisations to hold the employment-focused expo at its regular fortnightly event.
Advice and tips for job seekers, including resume and interview tips, interview dressing and skills development, were on available, with stalls from more than 10 specialist organisations, including Dress for Success, Navitas, Macquarie Community College, Centrelink, Fighting Chance and Futureability.
Stall holder Sidra from Auburn Diversity Services Inc, said: “We try to assist individuals to find suitable work or some form of activity that will assist them in achieving their long-term goals.
“Events like this are important because new arrivals need access to information on what support they can receive and without events like this people may not know what services are available to them.”
