Live music to celebrate cultures

COMMEMORATING Latin American and Australian Indigenous, Heartdancers and Lane Avenue Collective will be presenting the inaugural ‘Treng Treng’, a live music event.

“Latin America, as with Australia, has an incredibly well known cultural wealth that has been shared for generations by our ancestors,” one of the organisers, Fernando, said.
“Treng Treng is the name of the Earth Snake that comes from the Mapuche culture who are Indigenous people from the south of Chile and Argentina.”
Featuring artists Yulugi (Australian), Sonido de los Andes, Oxcar (Latin American) and more, the free event will be held this Saturday, October 12, from 6.30pm at Addison Road Community Centre.
“October 12 is the day when Christopher Columbus arrived in America, so it is the day when the full continent commemorates the indigenous people, like NAIDOC and ‘Invasion day’ together,” Fernando added.
“The event is family friendly and free but bring some cash for ‘Koshari Korner’ and the Egyptian cafe at Addi Road. There will be alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and also vegetarian options available.
“The idea is to bring culture to the community and educate through this live music event. Indigenous cultures are very important and we have to collaborate. Latin American culture is more than just great dance music and October 12 has a lot of significance to us; hopefully this will become an annual event.”
