New venue for snooker cup after RSL closes

AS last year’s winners of the inaugural Canterbury Bankstown Mayoral Cup Snooker Competition, the Bass Hill club was scheduled to host this year’s challenge but sadly lost its home with the closure of Bass Hill RSL earlier this month.

Bass Hill club president Jeffry Stone said, however, that Club Condell Park had come forward to graciously offer its venue for the challenge.
“While our players may choose to represent other clubs in the future, it appears this will be the final year for Bass Hill RSL’s involvement in local and interstate snooker and billiards competitions,” he said.
“In the spirit of the competition, Bass Hill RSL cordially invites other clubs to enter their best five snooker players in the second annual challenge.”
The Mayoral Cup evolved from one of the region’s oldest snooker competitions, the Bankstown City Shield, which was played annually for over 30 years and contested between five snooker clubs from within the former Bankstown council area.
In recent years, just three snooker clubs played for the shield – Bass Hill RSL, Club Condell Park and Revesby Workers’ Club.
The revamped competition staged last year, was contested between Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL, Padstow Bowling Club, Revesby Workers’ Club, Bass Hill RSL and Club Condell Park.
Along with the Bass Hill club, others confirmed to play this year include Club Condell Park, Revesby Workers’, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL and Padstow Bowling Club.
All games will get underway at 7pm at Club Condell Park, 178 Eldridge Road, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays, October 14-16 and 21-23.
“We look forward to another successful competition played in good spirit,” Jeffry added.
