Stacey St, M5 most clogged in all Sydney

A REPORT showing that two of Sydney’s most congested roads pass through Bankstown won’t come as a surprise to local motorists.

Infrastructure Australia has revealed that Stacey Street, which is part of the Sutherland West to Ryde west corridor (A6), and the M5 to the Sydney Airport corridor are in the top 10 of most congested roads for both the morning and afternoon peaks.
Labelling as “rubbish” claims by the Federal Government that they were “busting congestion”, Federal MP for Blaxland, Jason Clare, says the report shows that things are only going to get worse with traffic congestion on Stacey Street and the M5 “likely to double by 2031”.
Mr Clare told the Torch that while a small part had been widened, the State Government had still not committed to widening Stacey Street between the Hume Highway and Bankstown Central.
“The best solution would be an underpass at the intersection of Stacey Street and the Hume Highway,” he said.
“RMS has designed and costed it, we just need the State Government to fund it.”
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said upgrades had been carried out along Stacey Street to improve traffic flow and journey reliability, including an additional lane to ease congestion for southbound motorists travelling between Salvia and Daphne avenues which was opened in April.
“Work also included extending dual right turning lanes into Macauley Avenue,” he said.
“The next stage of work includes the construction of an additional lane for northbound motorists between Macauley Avenue and Stanley Street, and improvements to other key intersections.”
He said investigations into upgrades, including a potential 2.2 kilometre upgrade of Stacey Street between Stanley Street and Rookwood Road, as well as the intersection of Stacey Street and Hume Highway, were being carried out through until November 1, weather permitting.
