Free native tree in Biodiversity Month

SEPTEMBER is Biodiversity Month and to celebrate, residents can pick up free native plants and learn gardening skills from Saturday, August 31.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the Spring Native Plant Giveaway would be the first in a series of environment-themed activities.
“Becoming a greener council means not only making improvements to man-made elements of CBCity, but also appreciating the natural elements that enrich our lives every day,” he said.
“It’s important we pay attention to our environment and learn about the flora, fauna and natural resources around us.
“I encourage all residents to look at what’s on offer during Biodiversity Month and get out and experience local nature.”
To receive up to four native plants per household, residents can visit Earlwood and Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centres, and Riverwood Library and Community Hub, from Saturday, August 31, until Friday, September 6.
Other Biodiversity Month activities, include:
• Native gardening advice – Saturday, August 31, Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre;
• Birding morning – Saturday, September 14, Deepwater Park Milperra;
• Flora study – Saturday, September 21, Deepwater Park Milperra;
• Two valley trail walk – Sunday, September 22, Wolli Reserve, Bexley North;
• Wildlife display – Monday, September 30 and Friday, October 4, Bankstown, Chester Hill and Campsie Library and Knowledge Centres, and Riverwood Library and Community Hub;
• Breakfast with the Birds – Sunday, October 13 and Saturday, October 19, Wolli Creek Regional Park;
• Kayak tour of Cooks River – Sunday, October 13, River Canoe Club of NSW, Marrickville;
• Wolli Creek river walk – Saturday, October 26, Girraween Park, Earlwood;
• Kayak tour of Georges River – Sunday, October 27, Garrison Point Reserve, Georges Hall; and
• Bee-keeping workshop – Sunday, October 27, Ashbury Community Garden.
